Mercedes Schlapp has no easy work in the role of White House adviser for strategic communications. It is not easy for Mercedes Schlapp as the strategic communication adviser at White House. Schlapp is, however, not lost sight of her mission. She works closely together with White House political affairs and the legislative team along with policy shops and the wider communications team to coordinate the policy roll-out. So far, her focus is on topics like school safety, opioids, infrastructure, and trade. The reporter doesn't get to interact often in her current role. However, she attracted a lot of interest in March, when she was mentioned as a contender to replace Hope Hicks as communications director. Mercedes Schlapp's position as White House Strategic Communications Advisor isn't an easy task. She must contend with a president that acts as his own communication director as well as numerous legal fights which could disrupt the strategy of communication for the administration as well as a host of Cabinet secretaries who are caught in their own controversies. However, throughout it all Schlapp remains focussed on the task at hand, working closely with White House's political and legislative affairs departments and policy shops as with the larger communications team to coordinate policy rollouts. To date, her focus has been issues such as security in schools and the opioid crisis, trade, infrastructure and other related topics. In her current position she doesn't deal too much with journalists. She did draw a flurry of media attention when her name was floated as a possible replacement for Hope Hicks as communications director. The fighting has been nasty. Friends of Schlapp and Tony Sayegh, another candidate for the position started fighting in the media. Schlapp claimed that, following the time the Washington Examiner had published an piece that contained negative remarks about Sayegh's persona, she phoned Sayegh for a private conversation.
